Monday, December 8th, 2008

The Finnish handset giant Nokia has a new flagship model in its extensive collection, named N97. This large touch-screen enabled handset hopes to reinforce its smartphone offering.

The biggest mobile phone manufacturer of the World, Nokia called this smrtphone as the most advanced personal computer of the world.

Nokia had launched its first touch-screen handset, the 5800 XpressMusic in early October, which was after one year of iPone’s début. The 5800 model will hit the retail prorogue in January, 2009. The Nokia N97 is the second touchscreen phone released by Nokia.

Except the Apple iPhone, the N97 has a direct competition with the Sony Ericsson’s X1 and HTC’s Touch Pro. Both of these handsets use Microsoft’s Windows software.

Here are discussed the outstanding functionalities that the new N series model offers.

The smart and sleek handset possesses a 3.5-inch high-resolution and colour oriented Touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard. The QWERTY is designed in a slide-out fashion and is a full 3-row. This elegant smartphone transforms from a touch slate to a landscape QWERTY device. The users will find a leaning touchscreen display unit and a customisable touch-screen which can be personalised with widgets.

The touchscreen of the N97 has an aspect ration of 16:9 and a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels. The handsome looking smart phone is reportedly 30 per cent thicker than the iPhone.

The Nokia N97 handset comes with 32 GB of internal memory. The model also gives the advantage to expand the memory upto 16 GB by using microSD card. So, the users will be able to carry a handsome 48 GB of memory with this handset. The phone is equipped with a 5 mega pixels camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash. The refreshingly vibrant mobile handset also supports Nokia’s N-Gage gaming system and handwriting recognition feature.

The additional features of the handset, including a 3.5mm headset jack allows it to be used with normal headphones, microUSB port that used for syncing and charging, Haptic feedback and 1500 mAh battery. The smartphone runs on the latest version of Nokia’s Symbian operating system, named S60.

In terms of Website browsing, Nokia N97 is one step ahead of the iPhone. Nokia claims to use a browser that supports flash and flash videos, which the iPhone lacks. At a pre-launch event in New York, vice president of Nokia, Bill Plummer said that N97 is equipped with “real Internet browsing–unlike some phones”.

As per Nokia, the N97 possesses the capability to provide power backup of upto 37 hours of music playback, 4.5 hours of video and a lurching 16.5 days of standby time.

The N97 is also equipped with 3G network connectivity, a built-in compass and GPS navigator. The users will also find extensive connectivity options into this phone, including WiFi, tri-band HSDPA, Bluetooth and USB.

The social location (So-Lo) concept, introduced by the Nokia N97 is truly an outstanding one. By using the GPS navigator and the built-in compass, the handset possesses the capability to know where is the phone located and with the integrated social networking, it can also broadcast that position to the authorised friends and family.

Like the iPhone and other smartphones which are equipped with applications, the Nokia N97 comes with widgets. As per reviews, these widgets come as square and rectangle icon. With their help, the users will be able to access the shortcuts of frequently used contacts, the calender, music player and other phone features. The users will get the advantage to drag them around to personalise their home screens.

Nokia will release this smartphone in the first half of 2009 and it will be on sale for around $699.

In the year 2006, Nokia introduced its last major N-series hit with N95 and started its sales early of last year. Till date, the power-packed N95 has sold over 10 million and created revenue of several billion euros.
